The Investor
Before I went ahead and self-published my books, I wanted to see if I could get someone to invest and help me get the books out. I ran across an old friend and made contact but merely to make contact. Upon the connection he tells me that he and his partner are looking for books that they could make into a movie. Great. I tell him I just finished two short stories and I would be more than willing to sit down and tell him about the stories. We talk about old times and what's been going on in our lives. Some how we lost touch and in no time it seemed that time had not left us. I told him I see he is still married and he tells me that this is now his second wife. He has two boys and he is making major moves in his field of choice. He is a CEO of his company, etc. Great, he may be the guy to help me. We talk for hours just catching up.
Well he calls to set up an appointment for us to discuss my book. We meet at Starbucks and I began to make my sale of my story. I have a captured audience. He is asking questions, and can't believe all that is inside this short story. He wants me to go to the end. I tell him the conclusion and he is troubled because he wanted a very happy ending.
ME:"Not every story has a happy ending."
INV:"Well if I am going to make a movie out of this it needs to be a happy ending"
INV: "You will have to meet with my partner to pitch him the book"
INV: "He has to like it for us to move forward, You need to put something happy in there"
ME: "Ok, I'll see what I can do."
INV: "Do you have a manuscript ready?"
ME: "Yes I can get it to you tomorrow."
ME: "Good seeing you in person but I have to get to work."
We said our goodbyes and I felt like a load had been lifted. I already have an investor, I just have to add a little happiness to the book, no problem.
I get to work and all the while I am brainstorming on what could I put into the story. Got it. It took two days to weave a happy ending in there. I printed out and bound my manuscript for him to read and share with his partner and waited on his next call. He didn't call but showed up at my work. I handed him my manuscript and he informed me that he had already got on the phone and called a few people and a couple of publishers were waiting to see the manuscript. Wow, was I now excited. He was really rooting for me.
INV: "When everything goes well I can be your manager."
ME: "My manager?"
INV: "Yeah,you're going to need a manager."
Well while he is talking a client of mine walks in and starts to smile. The Investor takes the manuscript and informs me that he will get back to me.
Client: "Who was that?"
ME: "Oh that's my investor."
Client: "What is he investing in?"
ME: "One of my novels"
Client:"He may be investing in the book but he is trying to get some of you."
ME: "Whatever, dude is married with children."
Client: "And what does that have to do with anything?"
Client: "Where you know him from, how many movies or books has he invested in?"
Client: "Trust me dude wants to hit that."
ME:"He's an old friend and he has connections and he said he would help that is all."
Client: "Ok, tell you what, when dude calls you for a date and tries to get some, put on fb that I was right, I know what I'm talking about."
ME: "Ok. I think you are wrong but I will do it."
A couple of days passed and the investor called to see if I wanted to go to the movies, or have breakfast. He also asked about me being in a relationship.I told him I was single. Here comes that conversation I didn't think was going to happen.
INV: "Do you miss me?"
ME: "The friendship we had but that was years ago."
INV:"I love you"
ME: "I love you too."
INV:"You think I could come over?"
ME:"For what?"
INV:"We could rekindle old times"
ME:"Are you trying to sleep with me?"
INV: "Well we know what it was like."
ME:"That was over Ten years ago,you're married, I am not a mistress type, booty call, or the jump off type, I have to be The One and The Only One."
ME:"Do you plan on getting another divorce?"
INV:"I'm thinking about it, but I don't want to leave my boys."
ME:"So that's a no, and I think it is disrespectful that you even came at me like that."
INV: "I thought we were cool?"
ME:"We are, but not like that, I am not going to be some one's jump off! Any way what's up with the book situation?"
INV:"So we are just going to be Platonic friends?"
ME:"Well first of all I thought we were good Friends who shared a mutual love and understanding for one another, and you were going to help me with me book."
INV: "I am, We are, Let me call you back."
Directly after hanging up I sent those words to fb "You were right!" My client saw the post and almost wrecked his car laughing so hard. the whole time the investor was trying to sell me a dream, before that dreaded phone call, I took my quiet meditation time to ask God to show me this mans true intentions with and for me. I still made my calls and sent my manuscript out. My so called friend of ten years never called me again. I was troubled that his actions were such but such is life. Prayer works and moved that out of the way. My clients have my back and many questioned his loyalty to me and his credentials. He is a mover and a shaker and he does have connections. He just wanted a different connection with me. I'm all about business. You're either for me or against me.
